About the Netherlands Network
In 2007 a number of Netherlands-based signatories of the UN Global Compact founded a Dutch Network as part of the Global Compact's programme of establishing local networks. The Network continues to evolve and founded, November 2011, the entity of an association (see further below).
The Netherlands Network of the UN Global Compact is a national focal point for signatories.
It aims to further the Global Compact's 10 principles and serves members through (1) organizing learning activities, (2) mutual support with the Communication on Progress (COP), and (3) joint projects.
For an overview of our activities see the ⇒ Networks' Annual Report 2011.
The Netherlands Network: its mission, goals, strategy and actions
Mission
The Netherlands Network of the UN Global Compact (GC NL) is an initiative of Dutch business leaders to further the contribution of private business – within its sphere of influence – to sustainable development. Led and driven by signatory companies, GC NL will be guided in its efforts by the ten Global Compact principles and by the ⇒ Millennium Development Goals.
Goals
To achieve between now and 2015 a significant step forward in the contribution – to be targeted and measured both in qualitative and quantitative terms – from private business in attaining sustainable development.
Strategy
The strategy sets out to:
- stimulate private companies in the Netherlands to become signatories to the Global Compact;
- provide Netherlands business signatories with a vehicle for inspirational learning and benchmarking through:
- peer feed-back on the periodic COP (Communication of Progress) reporting to which signatory companies are committed;
- more general exchange of experience, also with public authorities, civil society and academic institutions that show an active interest in sustainability, with regard to the fulfilment of the GC NL mission;
- establish a platform for joint projects between signatories on a voluntary basis (f.e. the past Human Rights project in which 10 companies participated; the project Partnering for Prosperity; and the forming of a Network against Child Labour).
Actions
- Maintain a list of target companies to be approached, with a time frame. Apply 2. and 3. below to promote new signatories to the GC and assume, if and when required, ambassadorship toward that end.
- Organise one or two annual symposia under sponsorship of specific signatory companies/organisations to promote collective learning on the implementation of the Global Compact Principles and the Millennium Development Goals.
- Prepare annual GC-NL and specific event reports for network learning.
- Develop and maintain indicators to gauge the progress GC-NL against its goals
- Conduct peer feedback to improve the quality of Communication on Progress submissions. Consult with relevant organisations on measurement tools for COP reporting.
- Maintain an information resource to give signatories from the Netherlands insight into sustainable development institutions and initiatives.
